The Feng Office

How to create the perfect feng office

Have you ever wondered what the perfect feng office would look like? If there's one place we all need more calming chi, it's at work: otherwise, the stresses and pressures of our jobs catch up to us pretty quickly. But never fear: there are definitely ways to create a feng office.

Your Desk

For starters, try to keep your desk placed appropriately -- that is to say, in the command position: where you can see the door, but aren't directly facing it. Otherwise, your energy will drain through the open doorway.

A feng office never involves sitting with your back to the door, either -- it's not a secure place to work from. If you absolutely must work with your back to the door, or facing a wall, hang a mirror on the wall in front of you so that you can see what's going on behind.

The Atmosphere

The way you decorate your workspace can have a massive influence on how you feel at work. For instance, do you have a heavy shelf hanging over your desk? Feng shui tells us that it will come to represent the pressures and stresses waiting to crash down on you. Are there unlit candles decorating your workspace? Those fresh new wicks symbolize wasted potential -- even if you don't like burning candles at work, you should light them once to avoid the drain of chi.

Creating a feng office is about finding the right balance between energy and calm. You don't want an overwhelmingly yin office, or you won't have the energy to get anything done. On the other hand, an overwhelmingly yang office will leave you feeling nervous and stressed.

The solution? Create a balance of yin and yang elements. Bright red and calming blue can combine with sharp, pointed fire objects (strongly yang) and a water fountain (very yin). Usually, we don't recommend combining fire and water in the same area as they'll dampen one another -- but in this case, that's exactly what you want.

Just as in other areas of your life, the feng office balances elements with yin and yang to create a suitable mix of energy and calm.
